Dear Families,
As we begin a new school year, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our students and families. Whether you are returning to our school community or joining us for the first time, we are excited to embark on another year of learning, growth, and achievement together. September brings new opportunities, fresh beginnings, and the chance to build strong relationships that support every child’s success. Our staff is eager to welcome students back into classrooms filled with engaging learning experiences, creativity, and a shared commitment to excellence. As we begin the 2026-2027 school year, I would like to share important information about new New York City Public Schools policies regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and student screen time. These changes are designed to support children’s academic, social, and developmental growth by prioritizing meaningful human interaction, hands-on learning, and active engagement in the classroom.
NYCPS Student-Facing AI Policy
AI and Screen Time Policy Updates
For the 2026-27 school year, New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is implementing a moratorium on student-facing generative artificial intelligence (AI) in grades 2K–8, with limited use in high schools, and screen time restrictions depending on grade. The updated policies are as follows:

This means that software or applications that allow students to directly interact with Generative AI tools will not be used by students in elementary and middle school grades.
Updated Screen Time Guidelines
NYCPS has also updated expectations for individual student screen use during the school day.
- Grades 2K-2: No 1:1 student screen time
- Grades 3-5: No more than 30 minutes of daily 1:1 screen time is recommended
When technology is used, it will be for clear instructional purposes and under direct teacher supervision. Teacher-led use of technology, including interactive displays, classroom presentations, and small-group instruction, will continue to support learning where appropriate.
Supporting Learning Through Balanced Technology Use
These guidelines are intended to reduce unnecessary individual device use and encourage experiences that strengthen reading, writing, discussion, collaboration, creativity, and sustained attention. Our teachers will continue to thoughtfully integrate technology when it enhances instruction while ensuring that students spend the majority of their school day actively engaged with their teachers, peers, and learning materials.
Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion
We remain fully committed to providing all students with equitable access to learning.
The AI and screen time policies do not apply to assistive technologies and services required through a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan. Students with disabilities and multilingual learners/English Language Learners will continue to have access to the tools and supports they need to participate fully in their education.
